Travellers Warned: Flight Delays and Emergency Declared in Spain and Portugal
Airlines are advising passengers to check their flight status before travelling, as transport disruptions continue across Spain and Portugal following a recent massive power outage. While electricity has been restored, major airports and rail services are still struggling to return to normal operations.
Air Travel Severely Impacted in Spain and Portugal
Air traffic control centres in Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville were among the hardest hit during the outage. Although power has returned, many flights from these cities were delayed or cancelled, leaving travellers stranded and schedules disrupted. Meanwhile, Lisbon Airport in Portugal also experienced widespread cancellations and significant delays for both arrivals and departures.
Passengers are being strongly urged to monitor airline updates and follow official travel advice until normal operations resume.
Rail Disruptions Add to the Chaos
Local transportation in Spain has also been impacted. Emergency services reported that they rescued approximately 35,000 passengers stranded due to halted train operations. Madrid’s urban rail services have been operating at only 50% capacity, further affecting daily commuters and tourists.
Although high-speed and long-distance train services between major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Alicante, the Basque Country, and Algeciras have resumed, delays and disruptions may continue intermittently.
